Unief maakt brandstof met bijproducten van whisky

De Napier University in het Schotse Edinburgh kondigde aan een patent te hebben ingediend voor de ontwikkeling van een speciale vorm van biobrandstof. Een onderzoeksteam van de universiteit ontdekte de meerwaarde van enkele bijproducten die vrijkomen tijdens de productie van whisky.
De biobrandstof werd ontwikkeld na een project van twee jaar dat 260.000 pond (317.000 euro) kostte. De wetenschappers gebruikten de twee voornaamste bijproducten van het productieproces van whisky. Het gaat om de zogenaamde 'pot ale' en de 'draf'.
'De Europese Unie verklaarde dat biobrandstoffen 10 procent van de totale brandstofverkoop moeten vertegenwoordigen tegen 2020. We zijn gedreven om nieuwe en innovatieve bronnen van hernieuwbare energie te vinden', aldus professor Martin Tangney, directeur van het Schotse onderzoekscentrum.
Volgens Tangney wordt de nieuwe biobrandstof gemaakt van organisch materiaal dat al gebruikt wordt tijdens industriële processen. 'De meest waarschijnlijke distributievorm zou zijn om 5 tot 10 procent van de biodiesel te vermengen met benzine of diesel. 5 tot 10 procent minder van de gewone brandstof betekent echter reeds een zeer, zeer groot verschil', aldus Tangney.

Een nieuwe botteling voor België, geproefd op de West Coast Whisky Battle met Louisa Young (van Arran) en Jenny Karlsson (van Springbank).
Neus: fris, zoet, fruit, appelsieneschil, walnoot, kruidig.
Smaak: pruim, walnoot, kruidenbitter (met water nog zoeter).
Afdronk: lang met de sherry-toetsen die niet overweldigend zijn, volle afdronk.
Score: 87/100
Zeker de moeite waard om eens (opnieuw) te proeven.
Tasting note: Lochside Single Grain 1966/2007 Jack Wiebers
Lochside Single Grain 40 yo 1966/2007 (46,1%, Jack Wiebers "Old Train Line", #0753, 153 bott.)
Neus: cocos, aangename frisse zurigheid, fruitig, lemoenschil, vleugje zweetsokken (van B.), drupje pattex, chocolade, kruidnagel.
Smaak: smaak barst los met zoetigheid, zoete drop, typisch single graan, complex, tropisch fruit.
Afdronk: zeer lang, echt lekker, tropisch fruit blijft lang hangen.
Score: 92/100

Eyjafjallajökull
Wat hebben Tenerife, Eyjafjallajökull, de kelder van Pieter en Lochside gemeen?
De flessen voor de Lochside-tasting stonden in Pieter zijn kelder. Tot daar geen probleem.
Pieter was echter met zijn gezin op vakantie op Tenerife toen "de vulkaan met de onuitspreekbare naam" uitbarstte. Dus kon Pieter niet op tijd terug in België zijn (vliegverbod) om zijn flessen voor de tasting uit zijn kelder te halen en de tasting op donderdag 22/04/2010 te houden.
Maar van uitstel komt in dit geval geen afstel. Pieter is in het land, en geen vulkaan, geen sneeuw of tsunami, geen politieke crisis zal hem deze keer tegenhouden.
De Lochside-tasting gaat door op donderdag 20/05/2010 om 20u00 in de kleder bij Drankenshop Broekmans.

Lekkers uit de kelder van Pieter – Lochside tasting
Onze volgende tasting is weer een "specialleke". Pieter dook zijn kelder nog eens in, en rarara, met wat kwam hij boven? Lochside's van 1966 (en 1 andere.) Hij verrast ons telkens weer! Hieronder staan de Lochside's die we gaan proeven. Wacht zeker niet te lang om in te schrijven, de plaatsen zijn beperkt!
Lochside distillery
Lochside distillery was gevestigd in Montrose aan de oostkust van Schotland. Het opvallende aan de distilleerderij was zijn vorm: het deed een beetje denken aan een kasteel of aan een Duitse bierbrouwerij.
Maar de distilleerderij was geen lang leven beschoren.
Voor er whisky werd gemaakt, was het een bierbrouwerij, genaamd Deuchars. Deze bestond al vanaf 1781. In 1957 nam MacNab Distilleries Ltd. de bierbrouwerij over toen deze met zijn produktie stopte en naar Edinburgh verhuisde. Joseph Hobbs was een van de investeerders. Details »
